The teenager with Asperger syndrome sometimes does not realise the importance of good performance at school and feels that the teachers are to blame if they cannot get their pupils enthusiastic enough to do their best. There is, to an extent, perhaps some truth in this. Nonetheless, most teenagers realise that they themselves, not the teachers, will suVer most from not putting in a good eVort at school.

Delayed onset of walking is also common. Asperger (1979) and van Krevelen stressed late walking as a very common ‘feature’ of the disorder, but as the syndrome has become more widely known, it has become obvious that there are many who have ‘normal’ onset of walking. Clumsy, ill-coordinated gross motor movements are the rule even in cases where aspects of Wne motor development may be very advanced. Many children with Asperger syndrome are ‘over-careful’ and do not embark on potentially dangerous activities.
